Mariehamn
Tell us about yourself.
I am from Mariehamn in the Aland islands, that belongs to Finland. I am a educated physiotherapist and also work part time with media/press sportfishing/hunting at Aland visitors board. And i have been working as a fly fishing guide with Seatrout as my specialty. When did you buy your first camera? What was it? I bought my first camera when i was 15 it was a Canon of some kind, and i was using dia film. I had 2 lenses to start with 50mm and 120 mm
How did you get into Photography?
I have always been interested about how other photographers could do all this spectacular shots, that i saw in foto magazines. So i decided to learn how to take photos by learning from a friend, that was and still is a photographer. I have been into fly fishing for many years, and the interest of nature has been there all the time. And when i saw jumping big fishes i wanted to take pictures of them, so i did and sold quite many fishing pics to fishing magazines. Nowadays i still like to go fishing, but now i am more happy if i get back home with some lovely nature shots instead of fish.
Now what all gears are there in your bag for taking pictures?
My nowadays quite big backpack..Is packed with 3 camera houses, 5 lenses 14mm 15-30mm 40mm 50mm 70-200mm. and 2 tripods and one monopod, remote controls and lots of lens cleaners, flashes, headlamps, batteries, polaroid filters and different graduated greyfilters. And very often i have a compact Canon g16 with underwater house, for under water and rainy days.
What is your favorite genre in photography?
“Nighttime is the right time”So my favorite genre is night-photography of almost everything i can find..My latest idea was to shoot with big machines in the foreground, with aurora or the milky-way as background. But i always think about new ways and motives, that why photography is so fantastic, you always find new ways !!I am also interested in astro-photography, and there i am using telescopes for taking pictures of for ex the Andromeda galaxy, and closeups of the moon, my favorite telescope is a Bresser refractor of 627 mm f4 that also can use for daytime photo if i need a long lens.
Are you a professional photographer for just a hobbyist? Are you planning to make a career in photography?
I am a half professional photographer right now, and i am planning to be a full-time photographer. I am studying right now to become a licensed nature photographer, this is a distance education, so i can still work. And suppose to be ready in June next year.
Which one is your favorite lens and why?
My favorite lens is the 15-30 that i use for both daytime photo and night photo, i like it because of the fact that it allows me to get a very wide field for night shots, and the possibility of changing up to 30mm without taking of the lens, in nighttime with a lot of moisture i don't want to open the camera more than absolutely necessary ! What all software/applications do you use to edit your pictures?
What is your favorite camera setting mode?
For night-photography i always use the manual setting, and for daytime or sunset i use manual and aperture priority, sometimes shutter priority mode, night-photo needs as much light i can get, so full opening all the time .

artist of the week - karolaKarola is a Germany based artist, who works for a corporate. She is a creative person. Apart from photography she is a costume designer and does fashion designing.
Tell us about yourself.
What shall I tell about myself? The obviously easiest questions, are often the most difficult ones… I am living in Germany, in the near of Cologne and I am a mother of four wonderful sons, who meanwhile are adult men. When they were little boys, I didn’t have time enough to practise things or hobbies only for my own. I only found time to do some sports and to sew with my sewing machine, but nothing else. Then two years ago, I suddenly discovered photography for me…and I contracted a passion at once. When did you buy your first camera? What was it? In the beginning of my first steps in photography, I used my mobile to take pictures. It was a Samsung S3…and until today, meanwhile I use a S7edge, I am absolutely astonished, what this kind of electronic devices are able to reflect in pictures. Then in autumn 2014 I bought my camera, which I use from then on until today.
Now what all gears are there in your bag for taking pictures?
I possess a 18-55mm lens, which was delivered with the camera kit, a 50-200mm lens, a 60mm macro lens, a 1:1,8/45mm-2D/3D lens and a 1:3,5/10mm fisheye lens. The lenses are all made by Samsung as well. And I love my very lightweight travel tripod of Sirius… What is your favorite genre in photography? Oh…I don’t have a favorite genre. To be focused on only one genre, I am too much interested in so much things and situations. I always go through my life with my eyes wide opened and I love it when a subject literally jumps at me. So you can see pictures of landscapes, little objects, macros, street life, black and white pictures or architecture pictures taken by me. And…I like symmetrical perspectives.
Are you a professional photographer for just a hobbyist? Are you planning to make a career in photography?
As I explained a few sentences above, I am only a hobbyist…but this with body, heart and soul. Which one is your favorite lens and why? I like every of my lenses, but actually, I am in real love with my 1:1,8/45mm-2D/3D lens. It is able to give a picture an absolute clear depth of field. It helps to bring a subject to „life“…to bring it in front, in focus of the eyes of the beholder.
What all software/applications do you use to edit your pictures?
I am not using much of such stuff. To edit pics taken by mobile, I often use apps like „Aviary“ or snapseed“. For pictures taken with my camera, I sometimes use the software, which is provided by my camera. What is your favorite camera setting mode? That depends on the situation: To take a lucky shot of a „fast“ situation, I sometimes use the automatic mode, but most of the time I prefer manual mode.
